10 Tips for First-Time Trailer Hirers

Never hired a trailer before? These 10 practical tips will help you pick the right trailer, hitch it safely, load it correctly, and return it without stress.

1. Book the right size trailer

Most people underestimate how much they're moving or hauling. If you're unsure between two sizes, go bigger — a slightly larger trailer is easier than making two trips.

2. Check your car's towing capacity

Look in your owner's manual or search your car's make and model online. You need to know: maximum towing capacity (kg) and maximum tow ball download (kg). Both must not be exceeded.

3. Verify your tow ball size

Standard Australian trailers use a 50mm tow ball. Most tow bars come with this size, but check before pickup — a mismatched ball size is unsafe and a common first-timer mistake.

4. Inspect the trailer before leaving

Take photos of any existing scratches, dents, or damage before you drive away. Send these to the owner or note them at pickup. This protects you if there is any dispute about damage at return.

5. Test the lights before every trip

Plug in the trailer, then have someone stand behind it while you test: indicators left and right, brake lights, reversing light. Fix any issues before you leave — driving with trailer lights out is both illegal and dangerous.

6. Load heavy items over the axle

Put the heaviest items in the front half of the trailer, centred left-to-right. Too much weight at the rear causes the trailer to sway. Aim for 60% of the load weight in the front half.

7. Always use tie-down straps

Ratchet straps are essential. A loose couch, appliance, or stack of boxes can shift at a roundabout. Tie down every significant item.

8. Increase your following distance

A loaded trailer significantly increases your stopping distance. Add at least 50% to your normal following distance. On highways, keep your speed at or below 100 km/h.

9. Take wide turns

Trailers track inside your vehicle's turning circle. In tight spaces, turn wider than normal to avoid the trailer wheels jumping a kerb. This is especially important in carparks and driveways.

10. Return it clean

Most owners ask for a clean return — especially for cage trailers used for soil, garden waste, or mulch. Bring a broom and spend five minutes sweeping before you return it. It protects your review score for future hires.
