Is insurance included with trailer hire?
On peer-to-peer platforms like TrailerConnect, trailer hire does not include comprehensive insurance by default. You are responsible for ensuring you have appropriate cover before driving away.
Check your existing car insurance first
Many comprehensive car insurance policies in Australia extend to cover a hired trailer — but the specifics vary by insurer. Things to check:
- Does your policy cover a hired or borrowed trailer? Some policies only cover trailers you own.
- What is the excess? Trailer damage claims often have a separate excess from standard collision claims.
- Is the trailer's contents covered? Car insurance typically covers the vehicle and sometimes attached equipment, but not the items inside the trailer.
- Is there a towing weight limit? Some policies exclude claims if the trailer was overloaded.
Call your insurer before your hire date and confirm in writing that hired trailers are covered under your policy.
The bond
Some TrailerConnect listings include a refundable security bond. This is held during your hire and returned in full when you return the trailer in the same condition. The bond is not insurance — it is a deposit that covers minor damage if it occurs.
Our recommendation
Before every hire: call your insurer, confirm cover, and note the reference number. The small extra step is worth the peace of mind.
